Gold week ahead: the $4,071 to $4,281 box, and the days that can break it

Gold spot daily chart, Vantage feed, 19 October 2026, showing the range between 4,071 support and 4,281 resistance
Gold daily, Vantage feed. The box: $4,071 floor, $4,281 ceiling.

The picture

Zoom out first. Gold peaked near $5,600 in late January and has been correcting ever since. The August bounce to $4,700 failed, and since the end of September price has been stuck in a box.

The ceiling is $4,281. That was the floor through August and September. Once it broke, it flipped into resistance, and gold hasn’t been back above it since.

The floor is $4,071. It held the June and July lows and it held again last Wednesday when hot US inflation knocked gold to $4,073. Buyers have defended it every time.

Inside the box, $4,200 is the line that keeps rejecting price. We open the week around $4,170, bang in the middle. Middle of a range is where accounts get chopped up.

Why this week is different

The big US numbers are already out. CPI came in hot at 3.7% and producer prices jumped. Next week is the Fed decision on 28 October and PCE inflation on the 29th. This week sits in between, and the Fed is in its quiet period, so no speeches to steer things.

That means gold won’t be driven by the calendar so much as by three things: oil and the Strait of Hormuz, the 10 year yield (sitting near 5.07%), and how traders position before next week’s Fed. The data that does land matters because of what it does to hike bets. Markets price only a small chance of a hike on 28 October but a December move is close to fully priced. Anything that pulls that December hike forward hurts gold. Anything that pushes it back helps.

How to read the war headlines

US crude is over $100 after attacks on ships near Hormuz. Everyone assumes war means gold up. Not this time, not automatically. There are two trades fighting each other:

  • Fear trade: escalation, money runs for safety, gold up.
  • Inflation trade: oil up, inflation up, more Fed hikes priced, yields up, gold down.

The tell is simple. When oil and gold rise together, fear is winning. When oil rises and gold falls, the inflation trade is winning, and that’s what happened through the CPI week. Watch which one shows up on the next headline before you pick a side.

Day by day (times GMT)

Monday. Canada CPI at 12:30. Little direct effect on gold. The real job today is reading how Asia and Europe react to any weekend news from the Gulf.

Tuesday. UK jobs at 06:00, US housing starts at 12:30. Low impact. Expect oil and yields to lead.

Wednesday. UK CPI at 06:00, expected up to 3.4%. A hot number lifts sterling and softens the dollar a touch, a small help for gold. Then the swap trap tonight, more on that below.

Thursday. US jobless claims at 12:30. This is the only fresh read on US jobs before the Fed. Low claims say the economy can take a hike, so gold leans lower. A jump in claims says it can’t, and gold gets a bid. Existing home sales at 14:00.

Friday, the day that matters. Japan CPI overnight, then flash PMIs: Eurozone 08:00, UK 08:30, US 13:45. Final US consumer sentiment and inflation expectations at 14:00. Don’t just read the headline PMI. Read the prices paid. Hot prices plus rising inflation expectations is the recipe that took gold to $4,073 last week. Add Friday afternoon positioning before Fed week and a weekend of Gulf risk, and Friday is where this box is most likely to crack.

The two scenarios

Upside: a daily close above $4,200 opens $4,217, then the real test at $4,281. Getting back above $4,281 would be the first sign the correction is over.

Downside: a daily close below $4,130 brings $4,071 straight back. Lose $4,071 and there’s little until the $4,000 to $3,950 lows from June and July.

Until one of those happens, it’s a range. Trade the edges, not the middle.

The Wednesday trap

Most brokers charge triple swap on gold if you’re holding through Wednesday night’s rollover. It covers the weekend. In a range like this, where moves are small, three nights of swap can eat the whole profit on a swing trade. Check your broker’s swap table for XAUUSD before Wednesday and decide if the trade is worth carrying.

What most traders miss

In a choppy range you trade more, and every lot costs you spread and swap. The broker pays a rebate on every one of those lots, and most traders never see a cent of it.
